1291.com was established at the 1986 World Expo in Vancouver, Canada by Roland Solenthaler, who aimed to create an exclusive club which offered members a place in the Swiss Pavillion Restaurant with no reservation requirements.
The number 1291 refers to the birth of the Swiss confederacy. The story recalls that there were three regions that wanted to be unified to one country. This was just the beginning and many other independent regions then joined the growing allegiance. The last one to join was the region of "Jura" as recently as 1979.
In 1997 Roland founded 1291BedandBreakfast and 1291Cityhomes in Manhattan, the two pillars of the successful 1291 Corporation. 1291 continued to grow successfully and added other brands such as 1291.com, 1291International, 1291Club and 1291MyDog.
Some more recently introduced brands are LGBTCoin and TheSwissCoins, that no longer refer to the year of the birth of Switzerland (as not all Americans are familiar with the number 1291).
Today the brand 1291 is 26 years old and still very successful. The company is further expanding and constantly developing innovative concepts. This summer a new bar called 1291Goldbar will open in Midtown West Manhattan. It will be the only one of its kind in New York City. Highly motivated people and creative ideas are the driving force behind this unique growth story.
